Women’s U-19 World Cup all set to take off in Malaysia

The second edition of ICC’s Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup is all set to begin today, January 18, 2025, in Malaysia. The inaugural edition made its debut in 2023. In total, 16 teams are part of this tournament.

ICC Introduced the age-group tournament two years ago to give the top women players an international platform to represent their country and showcase their talent.

 This platform highlighted many top performers in the previous edition, who now represent their countries on senior level and are making history in the world of cricket. Titas Sandhu, who was the player of the final in the tournament is now a regular pace attacker in senior cricket team.

The tournament will be in round Robin format, where each team will meet all the other teams. The 16 teams have been divided into four groups with four countries in each group.

Nepal, Nigeria, Samoa and the host country Malaysia will be making their debut in the tournament.

Groups for the tournament:

Group A: India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, West Indies

Group B: England, Ireland, Pakistan, USA

Group C: New Zealand, Nigeria, Samoa, South Africa

 Group D: Australia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Scotland

In the first stage, each team will play with the other three in their group. The top three teams from the each group will then qualify for the Super 6 stage, while the bottom place teams from each group will go into playoffs for 13th to 16th standings.

The Super 6 stage will begin from January 25- 29, the teams will be divided into two groups and will play against those whom they did not face in previous stage.

The total points from the first stage and super six stage will determine which four teams will be part of the semi finals on January 31 and this will lead to the finals on February 2.

The matches schedule for India:

19 January – India v/s West Indies, 12:00 IST

21 January – India v/s Malaysia 12:00 IST

23 January – India v/s Sri Lanka 12:00 IST

In the 2023 tournament, India became the defending champions and won the tournament by defeating Bangladesh in the finals while Sri Lanka and Nepal made the semi-finals.
