Steve Smith Hangs Up His ODI Boots

After losing in the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against Team India, Australia’s captain Steve Smith has announced his retirement from ODI cricket. Steve Smith captained the team in the absence of Pat Cummins, but under his captaincy, the team could only reach the semi-finals. In this situation, he has now announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket. However, he will continue to play Test and T20 International cricket for Australia. He wishes to play for the country in the Olympics 2028 as well.

Steve Smith was one of the most prominent players of the Australian team. After Don Bradman, he was included among Australia’s most influential batsmen. He is considered the top player among the current famous Fab Four.

CA Chief Executive Todd Greenberg and Chairman of Selectors George Bailey also praised the legendary cricketer, appreciating Smith’s immense contribution to Australian cricket. Greenberg said, ‘Congratulations to Steve for a wonderful ODI career. He has made a huge contribution to Australia’s performance in the 50-over format during his career.

Smith played a total of 170 ODIs for Australia and scored 5800 runs. During this period, his average was 43.28, and his strike rate was 86.96. His highest score in ODIs is 164 runs. He has scored 35 half-centuries and 12 centuries in ODIs. Smith was not in good form during the 2025 Champions Trophy. He scored 97 runs in three innings at an average of 48.50. His best innings was 73 runs against India.

Smith was clean bowled by Shami on a full toss. Smith made his ODI debut against West Indies at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 19 February 2010. He has been part of the Australian team that won the ODI World Cup twice in 2015 and 2023. He was selected as Australia’s Men’s ODI Player of the Year in 2015 and 2021 and also got a place in the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year in 2015.

Smith is known for his unique batting style in Test matches and has made many records in this format. In 206 innings of 116 Test matches, Smith has scored 10,271 runs at an average of 56.75. His highest score in this format is 239 runs. During this time, he has also scored 36 centuries and 41 half-centuries, including four double centuries. Smith has also played 67 T20 matches. He scored 1094 runs in these matches at an average of 24.86 and a strike rate of 125.46. Additionally, he has scored five half-centuries in T20 internationals.
