Delhi Capitals crush Gujarat Giants to secure top spot in WPL 2025

Delhi Capitals Women recorded a comprehensive win over Gujarat Giants Women, going to the top of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 table with a commanding display at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The Capitals dominated the Giants in every department, winning with four and a half overs to spare.

The match was set up by Delhi Capitals Women’s bowlers, who made the most of a green pitch. Gujarat Giants’ campaign began disastrously, losing four wickets in the first five overs and struggling at 20/4. The loss of their mainstays, such as Gardner and Dottin, dealt another blow to their chances, leaving them struggling at 60/6. Bharti Fulmali came up with a gritty 40 off 29 balls in a late resistance that took Gujarat to a respectable 127.

Responding, Delhi was dealt an early setback when skipper Meg Lanning departed cheaply, but a bold decision to send Jess Jonassen in at No. 3 reversed the script. Jonassen and Shafali Verma dominated the chase together, adding 74 runs, which virtually sealed the match. “Mooney’s thunderous 26-ball half-century ensured a swift finish as Delhi romped home without any further hassles.

Delhi Capitals Women’s bowling was clinical, with Shikha Pandey and Kapp breaking Gujarat’s top order. Pandey’s early wickets put enormous pressure on the opposition, putting Gujarat’s middle order on its back foot. Titas Sadhu and Minnu Mani supported the seamers well, not letting Gujarat regain momentum. Delhi Capitals Women’s disciplined fielding ensured that the opposition did not score freely.

For Gujarat, the inability of their batters to counter Delhi’s seamers proved to be their downfall. While Bharti Fulmali and Tanuja Kanwar put up a brief fight, the team needed more contributions from the top order. Their bowlers tried to create chances, but defending a below-par total against Delhi’s deep batting lineup was always a challenge.

This victory helped Delhi Capitals Women earn their fourth win in five games against Gujarat Giants, further asserting their dominance in the league. The Giants were foiled by their top-order meltdown despite a dogged lower-order fight and now face an uphill battle in the tournament. In contrast, Delhi Capitals Women’s form and tactical strength make them solid title contenders as the stakes rise.

As the tournament unfolds, Gujarat Giants will need to re-evaluate their strategy and attempt to improve their batting performances. Delhi Capitals, meanwhile, have set themselves up as the team to beat, demonstrating tactical expertise and depth in their squad. The playoffs race is heating up, and each game from here on out will be vital for both teams.
