Vignesh’s path to professional cricket serves as a testament to his dedication, passion and perseverance. The son of an autorickshaw driver, Sunil Kumar, and homemaker Bindu, showcased his interest in the game at the age of 11 in the lanes of his hometown.

Mohammed Sherif, a local club cricketer, recognised the budding talent and encouraged Puthur to try his hand at left-arm wrist spin bowling, which is commonly known as ‘chainman bowling’. Puthur continued to strive for excellence, despite having limited resources.

Vignesh honed his cricketing skills over time and later joined the Malappuram District Cricket Academy. He then went on to represent Kerala at U-14 and U-19 tournaments but missed the opportunity to represent the state at the senior level in cricket.

A major career breakthrough came for Puthur during September 2024, when he played for Alleppey Ripples. The rising star took three wickets in the game, but this wasn’t the breakthrough he was looking for.

Puthur’s unique bowling style made him visible to Mumbai Indian’s talent scouts who were also a part of that match. The team management, impressed by Vignesh’s performance, invited him to the trials where he bowled to well-established players like Hardik Pandya under the supervision of legendary cricketer and head coach of MI Mahela Jayawardene.

Impressed by the player’s bowling skills, the Mumbai Indians bought Vignesh for a contract of 30 lakhs in the IPL auction. The 24-year-old played his debut match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai in March 2025.

Even though CSK defeated MI, Puthur’s performance was praised by MI skipper Suryakumar Yadav. Puthur took 3 wickets in his debut match, dismissing Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda, key players of the CSK batting line-up.

Former Indian team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni also acknowledged Vignesh’s performance with a pat on his back and words of encouragement, a gesture leading to encouragement by fans as well and further highlighting the player’s potential.

Vignesh’s journey is nothing short of sheer dedication and resilience towards his love for cricket. From the streets of Malappuram to a promising talent on the IPL stage. His journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring cricketers across the nation.
