Bumrah unavailable for first 2 weeks of IPL 2025

Indian pace ace Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss the first two weeks of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 because of a lower back injury. Bumrah, who is undergoing rehabilitation at the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, is expected to report to the Mumbai Indians (MI) camp in April 2025.

Bumrah has begun bowling, but he is not yet at full intensity. The BCCI medical staff is monitoring his progress closely and has adopted a conservative line to enable him to recover fully before returning to competitive cricket. A BCCI official said, “Unless he can bowl at full intensity without pain for an extended period of time, he will not be cleared to play.

The IPL 2025 season is set to start on March 22, and Kolkata Knight Riders is scheduled to play its first match against Royal Challengers Bnegaluru in Kolkata. If Bumrah remains out of action for the first two weeks, he is likely to miss up to four games. Without him, it will be a big task for MI, as he has been the key bowler for the team in recent years. The BCCI is also assessing the impact of Bumrah’s workload, with a make-or-break five-Test series against England awaiting him after the IPL.

Selectors will want to keep his fitness in check, particularly given his injury record. With another pacer, Mohammed Shami, also recovering from an injury, India’s pace arsenal is under scrutiny ahead of the England tour. Without Bumrah, the Mumbai Indians might have to rely on their bench strength and explore alternative bowling options.  The franchise has a history of nurturing young bowlers, and this time might see the opportunity for youngsters to fill the void.

As IPL 2025 approaches, fans will eagerly await updates on Bumrah’s return. His return is important not just for MI but also for India’s international games. The BCCI and MI administration are expected to provide further updates on his fitness as the tournament progresses, with fans eagerly anticipating his return to the game.
