Mumbai Indians posted a whopping total against Gujarat Giants in a crucial Women’s Premier League 2025 encounter, as captain Harmanpreet Kaur led the way herself with a fine half-century. MI batsman took full advantage of a batting pitch, leaving Gujarat with a thumping target to chase.
Batting first, Mumbai got off to a steady start, but Amelia Kerr was run out early after a risky single. Hayley Matthews provided momentum with a quickfire 27, smashing three fours and two sixes before edging one to the keeper. Nat Sciver-Brunt anchored well to a well-finished 38, but most importantly for the side, scored some solid shots into gaps to set up an important stand with Kaur.
Harmanpreet Kaur took the spotlight with a captain’s knock of 54 off 33 balls, hitting nine boundaries. She formed vital partnerships with Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amanjot Kaur, who scored a rapid cameo of 27 from 15 balls. Kaur reached her fifty in style and was given a warm reception by the crowd before being dismissed by Phoebe Litchfield at deep mid-wicket.
The lower order of Mumbai contributed at the end, with Yastika Bhatia making late fireworks. She hit a four and a six in the last over but was eventually run out while trying for a second run. The innings were finished well with MI scoring over the 180-run mark, courtesy of aggressive shots from S Sajana and timely boundaries by other players.
They failed to control Mumbai from their aggressive approach, with Tanuja Kanwar getting two very important wickets and Gardner and Kashvee Gautam at other places. However, key expensive spells from key bowlers enabled MI to maintain its dominance throughout the innings.
With a huge total on the board, Mumbai Indians will now turn to their bowlers to defend their score. Gujarat Giants, however, required a good batting effort to chase the target and stay in the playoff race. Mumbai Indians eventually won the game by 9 runs by getting the Giants all out for 170 runs.
