Mumbai Indians Lifts WPL for second time, Delhi Capitals go home empty handed

Harmanpreet Kaur led Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) to become champions for the second time. The match ended in an eight run wins for MI in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) finale, which was held at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium, on Saturday.

DC opted to bowl first with the aim of taking advantage of the pitch conditions after winning the toss. MI’s innings began cautiously, with openers Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews struggling against the disciplined bowling of Marizanne Kapp and Shikha Pandey.

Kapp’s brilliance with the ball was evident as she dismissed Matthews with a delivery that sharply cut in, rattling the stumps. Bhatia soon followed, falling prey to a stunning catch by Jemimah Rodrigues off Kapp’s delivery, leaving MI at a precarious 5/2.

The turbulent start of the innings was stabilized by skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt’s scoring 66 (44) and 30 (28) respectively. The duo gave a much-needed momentum to MI’s innings by building a crucial partnership. Kaur displayed top class performance, while completing her half century with a boundary, and continued to dominate the bowlers with her aggressive stroke play.

Sciver-Brunt provided valuable support, contributing a steady 30 runs before being dismissed by Nallapureddy Charani. Kaur’s steady innings led MI to score a competitive total of 149/7 in 20 overs.

Chasing 150 for victory, DC’s innings got off to a shaky start. The opening pair Shafali Verma and captain Meg Lanning were back in the pavilion early. While MI’s bowlers Shabnim Ismail and Nat Sciver-Brunt were successful in breaking up the early partnership. Lanning’s wicket was crucial, as she was bowled by an off-cutter from Sciver-Brunt, leaving DC at 12/2.

Jemimah Rodrigues and Marizanne Kapp failed to withstand the constant pressure from MI’s bowlers, hence failed in reviving DC’s run chase. Saika Ishaque’s introduction in today’s game proved decisive for MI, as she dismissed Annabel Sutherland, limiting DC to 44/4.Kapp showcased her all-round prowess, scoring a valiant 40 runs, but her dismissal in the 17th over tilted the balance in MI’s favor.

DC fought tooth and nail for the title but ultimately fell short to meet the escalating required run rate. Niki Prasad scoring 25 (23) provided some hope for DC as they needed 14 runs in the last over to lift the trophy. Ismail and Sciver-Brunt executed precise yorkers, restricting DC to 141/9, sealing an eight-run victory for MI.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur was awarded player of the match after her match winning performance. This is MI’s second win in the tournament asserting their dominance in Women’s cricket.
