Australia has made it to the semi-finals as the match was declared inconclusive due to rain. Afghanistan’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals have faded, but their eyes are now set on the match between South Africa and England on Saturday.
A defeat for South Africa could open the doors for Afghanistan. After India and New Zealand, Australia was the third team to reach the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy.
Afghanistan won the toss, batted first, and scored 273 runs while losing all their wickets in 50 overs.
For the team, Sediqullah Atal played an innings of 85 runs off 95 balls, while Azmatullah Umarzai played a brilliant innings of 67 runs off 63 balls. Thanks to their efforts, a target of 274 runs was set.
Australia, while chasing the target, made a strong start. By the time the game was stopped due to rain, Australia had scored 109 runs for the loss of one wicket in 12.5 overs. However, the match could not be restarted.
Due to the wet outfield, the umpires decided to cancel the match and awarded one point each to both teams.”
If South Africa suffers a heavy defeat against England and its net run rate falls below Afghanistan’s, then Afghanistan can advance.
However, South Africa’s net run rate is significantly better than Afghanistan’s, and only a miracle can now secure Afghanistan a place in the semi-finals.
